Colour of Light

Watercolour

Colour of light series is inspired by Sumi-e (traditional Japanese monochrome painting, using calligraphy ink)

In spite of Traditional western water colour, a lot of blank spaces are purposely left in Sumi-e. They are left for viewers to imagine what’s there or feel the light/atmosphere or take their mind off and give them rest (breath and meditate)

In western water colour philosophy, light is reflection of colour hence light has colours thus it’s painted with colour (except high light) but in Sumi-e it’s left blank and you can imagine the colour of light.

Through this project I am also trying to show diversity of society by using western material (water colour / NZ landscape) with Sumi-e method (painted by tone of one colour and using blank space) how it’s adapted and adjusted was like people migrating and merging into another country like I did.

I would like the blank space to inspire your imagination.
